The volume reconstructs the utopian tensions present within positivism, generally projected towards imaginary descriptions of the future, starting from Comte's System of Positive Politics which describes an ideal society based on collaboration between different classes. The temptation to describe the future in terms of the realisation of perfection is common to many other authors close to positivism. However, the book points out how an "althist" approach could sometimes create a picture that isn’t very confident, but rather worried of its consequences on human qualities, of a world too based on technology and on the materialistic values of economic progress.
