In a "Stateless culture" such as that of Italy at the dawn of the Modern Age, France was a looming presence, playing a role that was not only political and military, but also cultural. Through an approach as multiform and multidisciplinary as possible, this work seeks to reconstruct this entity with its myriad meanings, exploring the forms, modes and times of the culture that, as subject, observed its political, institutional and diplomatic history, as object, inevitably moulding them and contributing to determine their form, substance and appearance. The age of the fifteenth-sixteenth century Italian wars thus splits into a number of chronographical layers, different temporal depths, diverse durations: a half-century of historic-climatic and historic-environmental evolution in the Alpine area; a fragment of the 'present' history of the oldest realm of the Christian Respublica; the result of sedimentation within the contemporary gaze of classical topoi regarding the characters and peculiarities of the different races.
