The work addresses the theme of the contemporary urban park project, interpreted as an ethical and aesthetic space. Ethical, in the proper sense of the etymology, that is in conformity with the place, and aesthetic, as an urban space subject to qualitative evaluations and an area of production of aesthetic experience in a real environment animated by the presence of nature. By tracing a critical path through the history of the art of gardens and parks, and the current orientations of landscape architecture in Europe, the thesis statement is that the ethics of making parks implies, always and in any case, a reflection on aesthetic principles and values. The variety of the current production is read through some original interpretations: a historical framework of ethical and aesthetic models, the identification of park species, the definition of ethical/aesthetic categories. The concluding part proposes a modus operandi that finds in the narrative dimension a design direction. The volume is the publication of the doctoral thesis that received the Grinzane Cavour - Giardini Hanbury Special Prize in 2006. Open Access Work available on the E-Prints Archive
