Illacrimate sepolture takes its cue from the recent palaeo-pathological and historic research on the bodies of the members of the Medici family, buried in the crypt of the Medici Chapels, to look back at the history of the previous exhumations, starting from 1559, with the bodies of Lorenzo the Magnificent and of Giuliano, his brother, until the exhumation of the last century, conducted by Giuseppe Genna and Gaetano Pieraccini. Tracing the events of these burials, explaining the reasons for the (sometimes questionable) choices of the past, and contextualising the various interventions in light of the needs that motivated them, can in fact serve to indicate the right path to the researchers currently involved in the Medici Project. Based on archival documents and mainly unpublished iconographic material, this research should therefore be considered as a starting point for further investigations, and as an essential work tool.
