The volume shows the results of a study concerning the landscape fragmentation of the semi-urban lowland territories in the Florentine area, developed as part of the activities of the PhD in Landscape Design of the University of Florence. The edge landscape west of the urban centre thus becomes a case study to shift from applications to the research of theoretical-methodological elements. In this sense, the importance of design thinking clearly emerges as an essential cultural value for setting policies of active conservation, recovery and modification of the landscape.

Gabriele Paolinelli

Gabriele Paolinelli (Pistoia, 1965), freelance architect, member of the Italian Association of Landscape Architecture (AIAPP), deals with landscape planning and design. PhD in Landscape Design, he is tutor at the School of Specialisation in Garden Architecture and Landscape Design of the University of Florence and carries out teaching and scientific research activities at the Department of Urban Planning and Territorial Planning in Florence. He has participated in national and international competitions in the fields of landscape design for urban regeneration and environmental recovery, gaining recognition and exhibiting in international locations. He has published various disciplinary contributions, with F. Fiorani and G. Giovannelli he edited the volume "Verso nuovi modelli di pianificazione integrata, Alinea, 1994 (“Towards new models of integrated planning”). With A. Valentini, he is the author of the volume edited by P. Venturi, Disegnare il verde, Alinea, 1999 (“Drawing the green”) and together with B. Guccione he edited the volume Piani del verde e Piani del paesaggio, Alinea, 2001 (“Green plans and Landscape plans”).
