SIMdisaster is a simulation software conceived to respond to the training needs of health operators managing aid in maxi-emergencies, since the reproduction of such events for didactic purposes proves to be both complex and costly. SimDisaster reconstructs the scenario of a catastrophe using photos and films manipulated using computer graphics and integrated with three-dimensional objects generated by the computer. An interactive interface makes it possible to assess the scenario and hence take decisions about the logistics of aid operations, the choice of auto-protection techniques, triage intervention and maintenance of the principal vital functions. The scenario then evolves in real time depending on the choices made by the user.

Chiara Gasperini graduated in Medical Surgery at the University of Florence, with a thesis on "Health intervention in maxi-emergencies". She is now attending the last year of the School of Specialisation in Anaesthesia and Reanimation, and is currently engaged in study and research activities at CESPRO in relation to techniques of simulation for the management of critical events, with a particular interest in the principles of Crisis Resource Management.

Tommaso Rafanelli is engaged in activities of research at the Faculty of Architecture in Florence, studying the application of video and computer graphics techniques to the virtual simulation utilised in didactic processes. He has collaborated with CESPRO on the realisation of a programme called "Primo Soccorso Cave" (Quarry First Aid), supported by INAIL.

Sergio Boncinelli is Full Professor of Anaesthesia and Reanimation in the Faculty of Medical Surgery of Florence University. Since 2001 he has been Director of the School of Specialisation in Anaesthesia and Reanimation of the University and since 2003 Director of CESPRO, the university centre for research, transfer and higher training, engaged with studying conditions of risk and safety and the development of activities of civil and environmental protection.
