One of the distinctive features of Vittorio Gregotti's life in art is the constant and continual intersection between the work – designed or constructed – and theoretical reflection. This book, triggered by the inaugural lecture delivered in the Faculty of Architecture of Florence, hinges on the issues of representation, globalisation and interdisciplinarity. Three issues, selected from among many, through which to focus the muddled current state of affairs without complacency or indulgence. A critical practice aimed at that difficult target, that elusive ergon poieticon, which is perhaps alone capable of establishing architecture as a tangible «fragment of historically defined truth».

Vittorio Gregotti

Vittorio Gregotti (Novara 1927) is professor of Architectural Composition at the University Institute of Architecture of Venice. He has taught in numerous foreign universities and has been a member of the Accademia di San Luca since 1976 and that of Brera since 1995; he edited the journal «Casabella» for fourteen years. His most recent books include: Racconti di architettura (Milano 1998), L'identità dell'architettura europea e la sua crisi (Torino 1999) L'architettura del realismo critico (Roma-Bari 2004), Autobiografia del XX secolo (Milano 2005), L'architettura nell'epoca dell'incessante (Roma-Bari 2006). In 1974 he founded the Gregotti Associati studio; among his most recent design projects are: the stadiums of Agadir and Marrakech, the general headquarters of Pirelli Real Estate in Milan, the headquarters of the Banca Lombarda in Brescia, the theatre of Aix-en-Provence, and the Master Plan for the new city of Pujiang (Shanghai).
