The city experience in Italy during the Medieval Communes constitutes a unique case for the Middle Ages: a different world, if compared to the countryside, in terms of the set of customs, beliefs, practices that conditioned the attitude of a complex society. To verify Lopez's definition of a city as a "state of mind", he considers specific topics, such as the perception and memory of time (both real and mythical), the elaboration of behavioural models (the chivalrous one), the conditioning of urban environment up to the creation of a "sound landscape" of the city. The meaning of "citizenship" in the Italian Middle Ages emerges through the reality of contemporary testimonies .
