After the 1966 Arno flood in Florence, structural measures were complemented by research on real-time monitoring and forecasting systems. The 1986 “Progetto Arno” aimed to develop advanced flood-risk prediction by integrating hydrometeorological data from radar, satellites, and ground sensors with distributed hydrological models. A meteorological radar station near Montespertoli supported experimental studies to improve flood forecasting in the Arno basin.
