On the 21st May 2019, the University of Florence awarded Michele Casalini an honorary degree for his dedication and his important contribution in the field of Library and Archival Sciences. The ceremony, which was held in the Rectorate's Aula Magna in Florence, represents the first recognition of merit for modern library science and the second for library and archival sciences to ever be granted by an Italian university. The text features the complete speeches by Luigi Dei, Rector, by Andrea Zorzi, Director of the SAGAS Department, the Laudatio by Mauro Guerrini, president of the Degree in Library and Archival Sciences and the Lectio Doctoralis by Michele Casalini, entitled La centralità delle biblioteche per il progresso e la democrazia.
All the texts are published in Italian and English.

Michele Casalini studied modern languages and literature, publishing techniques, library science, computer science and business management, and is currently working as managing director for his family business, the publisher Casalini Libri. He has collaborated with the ANVUR (the Italian National Agency for the Evaluation of the University and Research Systems) as an expert member and with the Italian cultural ministry MiBac for the Italian translation of the RDA international cataloguing standard. Since 1999, he has been one of the organizers of the annual international conference on the future of academic information, the Fiesole Retreat. He is a member of several professional associations including the American Library Association and the Society for Scholarly Publishing.
Luigi Dei is the Rector of the University of Florence. He is professor of chemistry and an internationally renowned scholar of material chemistry, as well as the author of several scientific publications in international journals. In addition to his research activity, he is also committed to the dissemination of science and to writing literary texts. He is also active on social media, which he sees as an important tool for the dissemination of culture and science; based on his Facebook posts, he wrote his reflection on the concept of University in three volumes: “Diario Social di un Rettore”(Firenze University Press 2016, 2017, 2018).
Mauro Guerrini teaches Library Science at the University of Florence, where he coordinates the Master in Cataloguing. He has been chairman of several international conferences, including: FRBR, Electronic resources, Authority control and Linked data. He is former President of the AIB, of the IFLA 2009 Milan Committee and of the MiBACT Scientific Technical Committee; he is also a member of the IFLA commissions, director of «JLIS.it» and editor of the Italian translation of ISBD and RDA. He is the author of several books and essays, including the volumes published with Editrice Bibliografica: Introduzione a FRBR (2001); Biblioteconomia. Guida classificata (2007), La biblioteca spiegata agli studenti universitari (2012), De Bibliothecariis (2017).
Andrea Zorzi teaches Medieval History at the University of Florence and is Director of the SAGAS Department of the same university. His research topics include the political and institutional history of late medieval Italy, with particular focus on the history of the judicial systems, the formation of the territorial state and the types of political struggle. Among his numerous publications, some deserve particular attention: L’amministrazione della giustizia penale nella Repubblica Fiorentina (Olschki, 1988), Florentine Tuscany. Structures and practices of power (with W.J. Connell, Cambridge University Press, 2000), La trasformazione di un quadro politico. Ricerche su politica e giustizia a Firenze dal comune allo Stato territoriale (Firenze University Press, 2008).
