Enrico Fermi’s IEEE Milestone in Florence. For his Major Contribution to Semiconductor Statistics, 1924-1926

  • Edited by:
  • Gianfranco Manes,
  • Giuseppe Pelosi,

Enrico Fermi, Nobel Laureate in Physics in 1938, taught at the University of Florence just for two academic years (1924-25 and 1925-26). His research activity in these two years saw the publication of the statistics bearing his name (the two original 1926 papers by E. Fermi are reproduced in full in this book), which is at the basis of semiconductors, and hence of modern electronics. This volume is printed for the placement, at the School of Engineering in Florence, of an IEEE Milestone, within the ‘IEEE Global History Network program’, commemorating the event. The IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) is the largest professional association in the world devoted to advancing technological innovation in electrical, electronic engineering, and related fields.

Gianfranco Manes is full professor of Electronics since 1985 at the School of Engineering of the University of Florence. He is an IEEE Senior Member. He has leaded major European and National Projects and collaborated with leading International Universities and Companies (among the many Motorola and Intel). Research activity is focused on Microwave Electronics and more recently on the applications of Wireless Sensor Networks to environmental monitoring. He founded the Laboratory RF, Microwaves and Electromagnetics of the Department of Information Engineering at the University of Florence.

Giuseppe Pelosi is full professor of Electromagnetic Fields at the School of Engineering of the University of Florence. He is an IEEE Fellow ‘for the contributions to computational electromagnetics’. Among the various foreign Institution with which he has collaborated there are the McGill University, Montreal, the University of California at Los Angeles, l’Université Nice Sophia Antipolis and the Center for History of Science of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
