The Cultural Routes Program was created by the Council of Europe with the hope of making the citizens of a still divided Europe rediscover their common roots and identity, promoting the values and objectives of the Council of Europe, such as participatory democracy, human rights, the right to culture, the rule of law. The European Landscape Convention also promotes the values of the Council of Europe and the landscape is defined as an integral part of local identities and of the European collective identity. Landscape and itineraries are intimately linked: the itineraries cross rural, urban, suburban, industrial, coastal and lake contexts, showing to the travellers the peculiarity and at the same time the fragility of the landscapes they have crossed. The research aims to establish a methodology to be followed to create a landscape project for the Cultural Itineraries of the Council of Europe which does not neglect the value and the meaning that the Council of Europe attributes to both landscape and itineraries: the former is an identity context that makes tangible and expresses the stratification of the historical, social and economic heritage, whereas the latter are narrative elements of the memories and multiple identities of Europe.
