Between 1789 and 1790 the French cardinal Étienne-Charles de Loménie de Brienne (1727-1794), outgoing Finance Minister of Louis XVI, accompanied by his own librarian the bibliographer François-Xavier Laire (1738-1801), made a trip to Italy in search of rare, antique and precious books. In addition to the collection of thousands of books, involving Italian intellectuals, collectors, librarians and booksellers, the trip to Italy also gave origin to two important bibliographical works: the Serie delle edizioni aldine (1790) and the Index librorum ab inventa typographia ad annum 1500 (1791).
The book reconstructs this interesting episode in the history of European culture, bibliography and book collecting, also through the publication of many sources unpublished to date.
