The friendship between Gianna Manzini and Giuseppe Dessí, reconstructed in this book thanks to the Alberto Baldi’s research, was born in the mid-1940s, in the context of her collaborations with the magazine "Prosa", and would last until 1974, year of the writer's death. After the two were forced apart, their meetings in Rome, once very frequent, would be replaced by a dense epistolary dialogue, which would later involve their respective partners as well. In her letters, with a tone becoming more and more confidential, Manzini talks to Dessí about illness and death, sometimes alludes to complex family relationships, complains about the difficulty of reconciling literary work with private life, all the while trusting in her friend’s understanding, closeness and discretion, and hoping he would help her decrypt Enrico Falqui’s often difficult personality. The appendix of the letters is properly noted, and contains a singular unpublished piece titled I sogni di Dessí, which Manzini had written for the Almanacco dei sogni, a radio broadcast of the 1960s. The conclusion of this volume is a precious anthology of dispersed criticism, containing reviews and essays about the writer’s works which were collected from newspapers and magazines.
