The correspondence between Christina and her daughter Caterina represents a unique case in the epistolary panorama preserved in the House of Medici, for its breadth, for the variety of discusses topics, for the intimate and confidential tone transpiring from the letters. In the ten years spent in Mantua by Caterina, the two women exchanged advice, recommendations and fears which now allow us to follow and outline the broader scenario in which they both moved. With this edition, we have recreated the unity of a dense exchange of letters, which established itself as an unicum in the writer’s will, but then separated into two distinct nuclei during the events of its transmission. This volume presents the letters sent by Grand Duchess Christina of Lorraine to her daughter Caterina de’ Medici Gonzaga, which were included in the 6110 file of the Mediceo del Principato fund, preserved in the State Archives of Florence, and in the envelopes 1095, 1096 and 1097 of the Archivio Gonzaga of the State Archives of Mantua.
