April 2008 marks the bicentenary of the birth of Antonio Meucci (Florence, April 13, 1808 - New York, October 18, 1889), universally recognised as the inventor of the telephone and one of the greatest personalities who contributed to representing Florentine creativity and science. The Faculty of Engineering of the University of Florence took the initiative to celebrate the anniversary by requesting and obtaining the constitution of a National Committee from the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities.
