Promoted by the Fondazione per la Ricerca e l'Innovazione – set up in 2007 by the University of Florence together with the Chamber of Commerce and the Provincial Authorities of Florence, Prato and Pistoia – this pamphlet, addresses the issue of the patenting of innovative research results. It comprises a thorough review of the relevant legislation currently in force, offering appraisals and operational suggestions that can be utilised directly by those involved.
Conceived as an informative and practical tool, it provides initial guidance for those (starting from individuals engaged in university research) who do not have specific expertise in the patents sphere, and who find themselves facing doubts and perplexities in handling a technical or scientific result that qualifies for profitable practical application.

Mario Pazzagli is Full Professor of Clinical Biochemistry and Clinical Molecular Biology in the Department of Clinical Physiopathology of the University of Florence.
