Call it What You See: Karion Istomin’s Primer as an Educational Text on the Boundary of Epochs. The article is devoted to Karion Istomin’s illustrated primer. The first part of the article presents an historiographical review of the scholarly literature. Next comes a comparative analysis of the handwritten and printed versions of the book. The author emphasizes the primer’s historical, cultural and didactic aspects, and discusses the interrelationships between letters, words, and poems, as well as its visual scope. She examines the assumptions about the mechanisms of the primer’s creation and about its use in educational practice of the late seventeenth-century, a period regarded as a boundary between historical epochs in Russia.
