A primary aspect of the literary quality of Luigi Meneghello’s Fiori italiani lies in tracing the plurality of learning and reading experiences of its singular and typical protagonist, revealing the essential interweaving of knowledge and emotions in a journey of education. The essay begins the examination of this dimension of the text by following the needed threads of two different central forms of the emotional experience of knowing: one under the banner of impact, of being struck and overwhelmed, the other of illuminating connection and openness.
