Elegiarum Libri Quattuor

Edizione critica commentata
  • Jan Kochanowski,
  • Edited by:
  • Francesco Cabras,

This volume contains the critical edition of the Latin elegies written by the most important poet of the Polish Renaissance, as well as a philological commentary . The comment, in particular, does not only refer to the collection of similia, but also analyses Jan Kochanowski’s ways of “imitatio” (imitation), underlining his extraordinary poetic skills as well as his vibrant and lively relationship with classical texts, which he reuses cleverly to satisfy his own needs for meaning.

Jan Kochanowski (1530-1584) was the most outstanding representative of the Polish Renaissance. He is mostly known for his works in Polish vernacular (Fraszki, Piesni, Treny), but was also a remarkable poet in Latin, the language used in several of his works. Among these, the most notable are the epigrams (Foricoenia), the Odes, inspired by the Latin poet Horace and collected in Lyricorum libellus and the Elegiarum libri Quattuor, the subject of this publication.
Francesco Cabras is a researcher at the Department of Italian Studies of the Uniwersytet Pedagogiczny in Krakow. His research topics include the neo-Latin literature in Poland and the cultural relations between Italy and Poland from the 15th to the 17th century.
