This book presents a history of the Florence University’s 100 years, tracing its extensive evolution in higher education within the city, from its medieval and early-modern origins to its progressive institutionalization during the period when Florence served as the Italian capital, then culminating in the formal birth of the University on October 1, 1924. During the two decades of Fascism, it experiences significant development but heavily suffers from the intrusion of the regime. As a protagonist in the shaping of the Republic alongside its prominent professors, the University will establish a dense network of relations with the community, thereby contributing to its economic and social growth. Running parallel to the profound changes in the nation, this interplay – closely reconstructed in the book – will promote the gradual shift from an elitist educational model to that of a mass higher education.

Donatella Lippi, scholar of Classics, is Full Professor of History of Medicine (Unifi), President of the Fondazione Scienza e Tecnica, member of the Board of Directors of the Fondazione Santa Maria Nuova and of the Fondazione Careggi. She is among the founders of the Società Italiana di Scienze Umane in Medicina.
Emanuela Ferretti is professor of History of Architecture at the University of Florence. Her interests focus on the Renaissance, focus on the Renaissance, especially in the work of Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. She is director of the journal Opus Incertum.
Antonella Salvini is Associate Professor of Industrial Chemistry at the University of Florence (UNIFI). The scientific activity is focused on catalysis, biorefinery processes, cultural heritage conservation, polymers and biopolymers. She is President of OpenLab Centre for scientific education and popularization of the UNIFI.
Bernardo Sordi teaches History of Law at the University of Florence and he is a member of the Quaderni fiorentini Editorial Board, especially focusing on the history of modern and contemporary public law. He received the “Luigi Tartufari” International Prize for Legal Sciences from the Accademia dei Lincei.
Andrea Zorzi is Full Professor of Medieval History at the University of Florence. Visiting Professor (“Alphonse Dupront” Chair) at the Sorbonne Université, he is a specialist in political history of the 12th-15th centuries. From 2018 to 2021 he directed the Department of History, Archaeology, Geography and Performing Arts.
